Mysterious Massive Holes Appearance In Siberia

In 2014 unknown mysterious massive holes began to appear in parts of Siberia which gaining international media attention and promoting theories about the cause of mystery holes and how it could have formed. The real cause of the deep holes is still unknown, but several theories appear include hit by a meteorite or UFO, and the collapse of an underground gas facility. The favorite theory is that the hole was caused by an explosion of methane underground.

Massive Holes in Siberia

One giant crater in the Yamal Peninsula spanned more than 100 feet wide. A second hole is in the same permafrost region of northern Russia, and the third on the Taymyr Peninsula to the east in Krasnoyarsk region. Since then, scientists come to investigate to get a more concrete explanation. They have been able to determine that the mystery hole was not an impact of a meteorite. The version about melting permafrost due to climate change, causing a release of methane gas which then forces an eruption, the scientists are reluctant to offer a firm conclusion without more study.

Scientists in Krasnoyarsk region plan further study of this hole.  Andrey Plekhanov, senior researcher at the Russian Scientific Centre of Arctic Research added that the hole was most likely the result of a build-up of excessive pressure underground due to the region's changing temperatures. In addition, once scientists were able to rappel to the bottom of the crater, they found high levels of methane which support one of the theories. Methane is released as a gas, building up the pressure until the ground explodes.

These craters in Siberia may be an indicator as a “methane time bomb”. They are concerning because methane is a major contributor to the warming of the atmosphere.  As we know that the real cause of the deep holes is still unknown, but scientists continue to dig deeper into what is going on behind these mysterious craters so we will have more clues about the future of the Arctic and the future of our planet.
