In the early 19th century in Indonesia which at that time Indonesia was still colonized by the Dutch, lived a mother named Mak Emper and his daughter, Siti Ariah. They live in a pavilion that owned by a wealthy skipper. When Ariah was 16 years old, the skipper intended to marry Ariah. However, Ariah did not want to.

The reason was besides being a concubine, there was an Ariah's older sister who was not married. So, Ariah ran away from home to avoid the wealthy skipper. n her escape, Oey Tambahsia, a famous wealthy man in Batavia that time and had a villa in the Bintang Mas area. He then caught Ariah.

Oey is also known like to collect young women and he was so fascinated by the beauty of Siti Ariah. Therefore, Oey ordered two of his subordinates to arrest Siti Ariah. Ariah ran and gave a very strong resistance to them. Until finally, Ariah was killed by them in the Dempet Dam near Lake Sunter which was known to be a very haunted place.

Her body was dumped in the rice field area, about 400 meters from Ancol Bridge. The incident occurred in 1817, according to Ridwan Saidi's record, a Betawi figure who conducted research on the Ariah legend from living witnesses in 1955 - 1960.
