Okiku doll is very famous around the world about its hair growing normally like human hair. Okiku's name was taken from a child who was playing with Okiku a long time ago or its owner. This doll had a height of 40 centimeters, dressed in kimono with black eyes like beads, and thick hair. The Okiku doll had been in the Mannenji temple in Hokkaido since 1938. Originally, this doll was purchased in 1918 by a young man named Eikichi Suzuki in Sapporo where he saw a beautiful Japanese doll with Kimono. He bought this doll for his 2-year-old sister named Okiku who then loved this doll and played it every day.

Unfortunately, Okiku died shortly after that because of a fever. Then at the time of her funeral, the family wanted to put the doll in her coffin but somehow they forgot. The girl's family then put the doll on the household altar and prayed for each day in order to in order to commemorate Okiku death. Sometime later, they saw doll’s hair began to grow. According to this story, the spirit of the girl took refuge inside the doll.

In 1938, the Suzuki family moved to shakalin then the Okiku doll was finally deposited at Mannenji temple in Hokkaido. According to the priest at the temple, the traditional Japanese doll was always short-haired. He also confirmed that the hair of the Okiku dolls continued to grow about 25 centimeters long until to the doll's knees. Although it was cut regularly, the hair grew steadily. This story had inspired a variety of popular Japanese horror films.
