Story of the Lost City Of Z and Kuhikugu Ruins

The Lost City of Z is the name that given by a British inspector, Colonel Percy Fawcett Harrison for a mysterious city in the middle of a forest in the Mato Grosso region, Brazil. Fawcett believes that the existence of the lost city of Z refers to a document known as Manuscript 512 of the National Library of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lost City Of Z

In the manuscript, it was written by the Portuguese slave hunter (Bandeirante), named João da Silva Guimarães who told that he had visited a mysterious city in detail in 1753. However, João did not explain exactly where the city was. Fawcett just heard the story in the early 1900s.

Finally, he went to Rio de Janeiro to learn more about the manuscript and then explored the mysterious city. In 1925, Fawcett and his sons Jack and Raleigh Rimell disappeared in the region of Mato Grosso when they explored the mysterious existence of the lost city of Z.

The Last Expedition

On April 29, 1925, Fawcett still made contact with his wife via telegraph. He said that he would enter a closed civilization area in the Amazon jungle and would cross the upper reaches of the Xingu River to the southeast of the Amazon tributary. And since then, no news has been heard from them.

Matto Grosso is the name of the region around the Xingu River where they disappeared. Many people thought that they were killed by the local Indians. The Kalapalos tribe, one of the last three Indian tribes met them and said that they looked like they were sick.

There was no evidence that confirmed the murder of Indian tribes they entered into their territory. It is because the Indian tribes in the Matto Grosso region are quite friendly, except for the Indians in the East. However, in 2005, another story emerged.

A writer from The New Yorker, David Grann visited the Kalapalos Indian tribe and got word of mouth that Fawcett and his team settled with them temporarily and continued their journey eastward. The Kalapalos tribe also reminded them not to enter the civilization they were looking for in the east because the area was guarded by Indian tribes who like to attack.

Five days after Fawcett's eastward journey, it was seen smoke rising from their camp. All of that was witnessed by the Kalapalos tribe. The full story of the search for Fawcett's trace is written in the book The Lost City of Z.

Kuhikugu Ruins and Civilization

An archaeologist named Michael Heckenberger allegedly discovered the mysterious city. The buried ancient city is known as Kuhikugu. Michael found the sites with Kuikuro local tribe who are descendants of the Kuhikugu tribe. Kuhiguku is a past heritage site of an Indian civilization in the Amazon rainforest, located southeast of the Xingu river, Brazil.

Interestingly, almost everything written by Portuguese explorers in Manuscript 512 is similar to this site. Manuscript 512 told that there was a large gate to the city surrounded by large houses and there was a temple in it. It has 28 cities and villages in an area of 7,700 square kilometers that can accommodate 50,000 residents.

The people lived by farming. They also build dams and fish ponds. This civilization began to be abandoned by its inhabitants in the early 16th century when European explorers came and settled in their settlements with a plague. Nearly two-thirds of the population died from this outbreak. The city then was covered by the thick jungle of the Amazon.

Finally, it was rediscovered by Portuguese explorers in 1743 and named City of Z by Percy Harrison Fawcett. The Kuhikugu site is now part of 26,420 square kilometers of Xingu Indigenous Park in the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil. The Brazilian president at the time, Janio Quadros signed the inauguration of the Xingu National Park on April 14, 1961.
