Aokigahara Mysterious Suicide Forest in Japan

There are some places on this Earth that just seem to be cursed. One of them is Aokigahara and also known as the "Suicide Forest" is a mysterious suicide forest at the foot of Japan's Mount Fuji. The forest has a historical reputation as the home of ghosts of the dead in Japanese Mythology. Each year the authorities remove as many as 100 bodies found hanging at the country’s suicide hotspot.

The Aokigahara becomes one of the world's most popular destinations for suicide. Because of the density of the forest, it is too easy to disappear among the evergreens and never be seen again. The hikers and tourists trekking through Aokigahara also have begun to use plastic tape to mark their paths to avoid getting lost.

The first moment when you step into Aokigahara, it quickly becomes apparent that something is slightly and notices the disconcerting silence here. The density blocked the sun and wind producing dark creepy place. The compasses also do not work properly here. Azusa Hayano has studied and tended to the forest for more than 30 years. Even he cannot make sense of the trend.

Those who look to end their lives here have become so common that locals can easily spot the three types of visitors to the forest. They are hikers interested in seeing the stunning vistas of Mount Fuji, curious thrill seekers, and those who don’t plan on returning.

Annual body searches have been conducted by police, volunteers, and attendant journalists since 1970. In 2003, 105 bodies were found in the forest, more than the previous record of 78 bodies in 2002. We do not know exactly what causes that make them end their life here, but the most common means of suicide in the forest were hanging or drug overdose.  Only those despairing, forgotten souls who spent their last moments in this dark quiet in the shadow of Mt. Fuji will ever know for sure.
